Mahatma Gandhi, a well-recognized civil rights leader, a freedom fighter and social leader of India, established nonviolent resistance to lead the successful campaign for India's independence from British rule and inspired other leaders around the world to follow the path of peaceful demonstrations for equality, justice and freedom. His transformational leadership made a lasting mark on the history of India and on the practice of nonviolent civil disobedience globally.
